Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor

This apprenticeship has been designed to provide access to development opportunities for as wide a range of individuals as possible. This includes individuals who are at the start of their career in leadership and management and who wish to take their first steps into professional management. It is also appropriate for those already in management roles who may already have developed practical experience but who wish to develop their theoretical understanding of management skills.

A team leader/supervisor is a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.

Aims of this qualification

The aim of this qualification is to support the learners understanding of key responsibilities as a Team Leader which are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

Job Roles this qualification is suitable for:

Roles/Occupations may include: Supervisor, Team Leader, Project Officer, Shift Supervisor, Foreperson, and Shift Manager.

On Programme Learning:

There will be on-programme assessment of knowledge, skills and behaviour outcomes on route to the final synoptic end point assessment.

The programme consists of the following:

  • On programme learning / Team Leader Supervisor
  • Regular performance reviews between apprentice and line manager
  • Functional skills in maths at Level 2 (consisting of a test, unless a valid exemption can be provided)
  • Functional skills in English at Level 2 (consisting of 2 tests, reading and writing and an assessment in speaking and listening, unless a valid exemption can be provided)
  • Feedback from line manager, peers and direct reports (including 180/360-degree feedback or equivalent)
  • Development of a portfolio of evidence
  • Development of a CPD log
  • End Point Assessment

How is it delivered?

The learner will be allocated a qualified Tutor to support the full completion of the qualification and prepare for end point assessment. The tutor will meet with the learner on a regular basis in the workplace to conduct assessments which will be planned with the learner and their manager; assessment will also be conducted through a blended model of e–Learning and face to face delivery.

The Tutor will manage the learner’s portfolio of evidence using an online electronic system called OneFile and provide regular updates about progress. The learner can contact their Tutor in between visits to discuss any aspect of the qualification and will have access to their individual learner’s portfolio.

End Point Assessment

An End-Point Assessment will be carried out by staff from an independent End-point assessment provider approved by the Register of Apprenticeship Organisation.

The End Point Assessment will test the entire Standard, and be undertaken as follows:

  • Assessment of knowledge through a test using scenarios, questions and responses
  • Assessment of competency through competency-based interview
  • Assessment of portfolio of evidence
  • Continuing Professional Development Log reviewed and professional discussion/question and answer session.

Assessment Gateway

An End Point Assessment will be carried out by staff from an independent End Point Assessment centre approved on the Register of End Point Assessment Organisations.  

The End Point Assessment will test the entire apprenticeship standard, and be undertaken as follows:

  • Assessment of knowledge through a test using scenarios, questions and responses
  • Assessment of competency through competency-based interview
  • Assessment of portfolio of evidence
  • Continuing Professional Development Log reviewed and professional discussion/question and answer session.

Assessment Gateway

Before the learner is adjudged ready to undertake the End Point Assessment by their employer and learning provider, they will need to:

  • Complete Team Leader / Supervisor standard (knowledge skills and behaviours)
  • Complete Level 2 maths and English Functional Skills
  • Completed a Portfolio of evidence
  • Record an appropriate Personal Development Log
  • It is also recommended that the apprentice is supported to become digitally literate where this is important to their

The purpose of the End Point Assessment is to test (in a synoptic way) the skills, knowledge and behaviours of the learner as set out in the apprenticeship standard

The learner’s manager will be required to take part in the end point assessment on several occasions to undertake / support activities – This is a mandatory requirement, please confirm your agreement to commit in order to enrol.

End Point Assessment provides learners with a showcase opportunity to provide oral and documentary evidence of their knowledge, skills and behaviours developed throughout the apprenticeship. Enables the independent assessor to assess the skills and behaviours of the apprentice by observing the learner in the course of their normal work. Tests the knowledge acquired by the apprentice throughout the apprenticeship.

How long will it take to complete?

The qualification usually takes around 15-18 months however it is possible to complete earlier depending on existing achievement and individual circumstance which can be discussed with the Tutor.

Progression routes:

On completion, learners may choose to register as Associate members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, to support their professional career development and progression.
