Early Years Specialist Tutor

Main Purpose of Role:

The apprenticeship tutor will deliver Early Years apprenticeship programmes level 2-5. The role will require the successful candidate to have a good understanding of early years apprenticeship standards and be highly experienced and qualified in early years to successfully deliver the programme. The tutor will also be responsible for mentoring the apprentices during their work placements and ensuring they are in a safe environment where they can progress and learn.

Key Accountabilities:

  • To support the recruitment of appropriate candidates for early years apprenticeships in the workplace.
  • To follow recruitment and enrolment procedures for candidates and ensure that initial assessment is carried out.
  • To complete an initial screening with apprentices to identify their level of knowledge and experience in early years and advise on the appropriate apprenticeship pathway.
  • To establish good relationships with apprentices assigned to you, ensuring they are clear about the tasks they have been set and deadlines to meet.
  • To respond to all apprentices within a 24-hour maximum time frame.
  • To ensure the individual learning plan (ILP) is completed, updated and maintained for all candidates on your caseload.
  • To advise and support learners in the selection of units and levels, including specifying which aspects of the standards must be assessed through performance in the workplace where appropriate.
  • To deliver high-quality training and ensure timely completion of the apprenticeship standard and qualification.
  • To teach and embed functional skills in English and maths and prepare learners for exams.
  • To support learners to achieve their functional skills in English and maths up to level 2.
  • To act as an advocate in resolving problems between learners and parents (where applicable) and keep employers updated on learners’ progress.
  • To carry out regular tripartite reviews with learner and employer every 8 – 12 weeks and keep accurate records of learner’s progress and achievement.
  • To prepare learners for the End Point Assessment (EPA) ensuring they fully understand the process and requirements.
  • To support learners to complete a journal of training and learning using OneFile and monitor the frequency of journal entries on a weekly basis to ensure all learners meet the minimum 20% off-the-job training requirement.
  • To lead on the development of training materials to ensure dynamic and engaging teaching sessions across the early years’ sector for levels 2-5.
  • To teach and support apprentices on the early years’ programmes, enabling effective progress on their apprenticeship, generating evidence against requirements and successfully achieving EPA.
  • To carry out assessments of candidates monthly in accordance with the awarding body requirements and provide oral and written feedback directly following assessment or within five working days, ensuring records on OneFile are accurate and up to date.
  • To ensure the quality of the assessment process is maintained and the best practice is adhered to by working with the Internal Quality Assurer and attending regular standardisation meetings.
  • To keep accurate records of learners’ attendance which are regularly shared with the relevant employer.
  • To attend internal team meetings, regular standardisation, INSET days and continuous professional development (CPD) events.
  • To maintain and record a minimum of 30 hours CPD per year.
  • To participate in the course review and evaluation process.
  • To understand Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework and the importance of the key areas of delivery.
  • To uphold Pier Training’s standards and policies for Equality and Diversity, Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values.

General Duties:

  • Actively promote and market Pier Training and present a positive image of the company.
  • Ensure the quality standards and performance measures applying to the work of the section are met and facilitate continuous improvements in all aspects of the post.
  • Undertake any self-development and training as necessary for success in the role.
  • Carry out duties at all times in accordance with the Pier Training’s policies including equality and diversity and health and safety policies.
  • Incorporate into the role the philosophy, values and behaviour stated in Pier Training’s mission and strategic plans.
  • Promote within Pier Training a positive approach to security and discipline. Undertake any other responsibilities that senior management representatives may require from time to time.

Qualifications and Attainments
  • A degree qualification relevant to Early Years.
  • Teaching and assessing qualifications (CAVA / TAQA, A1/V1 /D32,33).
  • Relevant teaching or coaching qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working with others to support them to improve their performance and or achievement.
  • Level 2 maths and English qualifications at Grade C or above (Level 4 reformed GCSE or higher).
  • Educated to degree level standard in a similar field of study.
  • Early Years Professional Status or Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).
  • D34 A/V qualification.
  • A teaching qualification (Cert Ed/Diploma)
Relevant Experience
  • At least 5 years of working experience within the Early Years sector.
  • Proven experience of successfully managing the full learner journey; initial assessment, IAG, diagnostic, teaching-learning-assessment, including classroom and 1:1 delivery.
  • Experience of using e-portfolio systems.
  • Familiar with early years apprenticeship standards.
  • Experience in maintaining a personal development portfolio.
  • Sound skills including appropriate assessment methods.
  • The ability to work with the requirements of awarding bodies.
  • Awareness of current developments in awards, qualifications and standards including Ofsted and ESFA compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with current practices within the early years’ sector.
  • Experience in functional skills delivery in English and maths.
  • Ability to review student’s coursework and identify non-technical areas for improvement, i.e., structure, spelling, grammar, syntax, referencing etc.
  • Good organisation and administrative abilities, with relevant IT skills including a working knowledge of the following software packages: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • An enthusiasm for all aspects of 16+ education and a commitment to the well-being of students.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • An understanding of employers within the early years’ sector.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of apprenticeship End Point Assessment.
