Business Development Manager
An exciting opportunity has arisen at Pier Technology Ltd trading as Pier Training for an experienced Business Development Manager who has passion and drive to make apprenticeships a desirable choice for employers.
We hold learner and employer at the heart of everything we do by delivering quality apprenticeship training in the workplace. Our aim is to be a national forerunner in training and development for clients in the private and public sectors. Pier Training works with NHS trusts, chain of private hospitals and other private sector levy paying employers. The SME market is current underserved at Pier Training.
50% of our delivery is focused on clinical healthcare and 50% on professional services apprenticeships.
Over 90% of our apprentices achieve a Distinction, we have achieved ‘Good ‘ outcome in our recent full Ofsted inspection in April 2023, excellent ESFA audit in June 2023, excellent learner progression data, and fantastic testimonials from our existing clients for you to confidently approach prospects.
Our SMT consists of a Quality Assurance Manager who is also an Ofsted inspector. Our team consists of a digital marketer and designer who will assist the BDM in various marketing campaigns to promote apprenticeship services.
The business has recently appointed 3 new tutors and we are looking to grow further from 1st August 2024 ESFA year.
Our Qualification Achievement Rate up to May 2024 is 69.3% overall, this is set to increase to 75% or above after June and July 2024 figures are taken into account.

Main Purpose of Role:
- To identify, pursue and secure new business opportunities.
- To provide advice and leadership on Sales and Marketing across the Company.
Essential Requirements:
- Successful candidate must have proven experience of developing new business with SME’s and levy employers for apprenticeship starts (existing workforce and generate apprenticeship vacancies), we will not be accepting applications from candidates without a proven track record in this area.
- Must have proven experience of working towards and achieving learner start targets. The candidate must be able to provide evidence of their activity in the first 3 months in previous/current role and the last 3 months in previous/current role.
- Demonstrate capability in leading, directing, motivating and managing colleagues to achieve agreed but realistic objectives.
- Must have an established network in the Apprenticeship levy and SME area.
- The candidate must have a proven track record of generating own employer leads without the support from telesales or appointment generating team.
- Excellent understanding of Apprenticeship funding criteria and able to give advice on Levy spending, negotiating / winning and closing new business.
- Must have knowledge of generating leads.
- Full, clean driving licence and use of a vehicle.
The Role:
- To proactively seek and secure new business opportunities to the point of delivery.
- Identify and engage with apprenticeship levy / corporate companies at a decision-making level for the generation of new apprenticeship starts, for a range of apprenticeship standards.
- Generate own leads via field sales, cold calling, networking to include, tradeshows and presentations to secure new employer accounts and promote Pier as a preferred supplier of training. Own the creation of B2B lead generation strategy.
- Give advice and support to employers regarding the apprenticeship levy, levy transfers and SME digital apprenticeship service.
- Undertake Organisational Needs Analysis and design, develop training plans to meet employer’s needs.
- To maintain throughout the life of a contract a positive CRM regime and identify and develop expansion of current business or new business with existing clients wherever possible.
- To ensure that all business development is in accordance with and cognisant of Pier’s capabilities, policies, practices and procedures.
- To refer tendering opportunities to the bid writing team and to lead others in preparation of tenders and bid documentation.
- To maintain client data on the Pier CRM system (where applicable).
- To prepare a monthly Business Development report and submit it to the Managing Director.
- To provide additional feedback to Managing Director on a regular, routine basis to include post-visit/meeting reports.
- To write and maintain a Marketing Plan.
- To advise and lead on sales and marketing.
- To generate business through social media marketing.
- Manage, facilitate or attend meetings connected with the Business Development role.
- Ensure adherence to budgetary and financial procedures and controls as per Pier policies, practices and procedures.
- To have commercial awareness and acumen, understand the implication to the business of early leavers and poor-quality learners.
- To maintain an ongoing personal development plan as part of periodic performance management activities.
- To undertake any other duties appropriate to the post as directed by Managing Director.
